How to Prep and Paint Wood Siding
Wood siding has been known to last for years; however, only when it is properly maintained and cared for. Applying a fresh coat of paint every couple of years will ensure that your home continues to look beautiful. So, knowing how to prepare and paint your wood siding can make the process go a great deal smoother.
Power Washing
Adjust the pressure on your power washer to the lightest and remove any dirt or debris that is attached to the surface of your wood siding. Use a stiff-bristled brush to remove away anything that can resist coming off. You can increase the water pressure as and when needed; however, don’t increase it so much that it starts to damage the wood.
Remove Loose Paint or Debris
Remove any loose paint or debris with either a sanding block or an electric sander. If you are using the latter, try to maintain an even but firm pressure so that you don’t nick or gouge the surface. Depending on the age of your siding, the edges could be a little rough. Sand off any splintered areas and remove loose pieces of wood that are protruding.
Fill Holes and Make Necessary Repairs
Use vinyl spackling to fill holes or gaps. You will have to leave this to cure, before you apply another coat, to make sure it has been filled in evenly. If there is siding that is either cracked or damaged, now is the best time to replace it.
Sand and Smooth Patched Areas
Once the spackling has cured, use fine-grit sandpaper and smooth the patched areas. This will remove any bumps or ridges that were created during the spackling process. Filling and sanding holes will often have to be performed multiple times to ensure the hole is filled. It is also important to run the sander over each siding panel from edge to edge, make sure to lightly sand the sides and edges as that will remove any rough spots.
